Education

Dr. Addo received his Bachelor’s degree in Geography with a minor in Archaeology from the University of Ghana and his first Master’s degree in Geography from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Planning (focusing on Regional and Economic Development) from the University of Sheffield in England (the Department of Town and Regional Planning was the only department in the country with five-star rating for five consecutive years). After moving to Canada, he obtained a second Master’s degree in Political Science (with an emphasis on Public Policy and Administration) from the University of Toronto. Dr Addo also holds Certificate (Honours), Diploma (Honours) and a Professional Certificate in International Development Studies from the University of Oslo, Norway; Toronto School of Business, Ottawa Campus; and the Alliance of Canadian Travel Association (ATCA) and the Canadian Institute of Travel Counsellors (CITC), respectively.

Professional/Career Development

Dr. Addo was the first Chair of the Tourism Studies Program, Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), Grenfell Campus, on the west coast of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He joined MUN in August 2006 from St. Cloud State University (SCSU) in Minnesota, USA where for six years he developed and taught several travel and tourism courses in the Department of Geography. At SCSU Dr. Addo served on the African Studies Committee and he was the coordinator of the travel/tourism internship programme, and adviser to the student chapter of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), the meeting industry's leading education and networking organization in USA. In 2004 Dr. Addo brought 24 SCSU students to Ghana during the spring intersession (17 May–2 June). The tour covered a variety of educational topics ranging from history to local culture. On returning to SCSU, three of the students won all five prizes of a photo essay contest when they competed with students who also went on educational tours in other countries. He was tenured in 2006 but decided to move to Canada to join Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), Grenfell Campus as first chair of the Tourism Studies Program in August 2006. In June 2014, Dr. Addo decided to move to his home country Ghana to join his family and Zenith University College in Accra as Dean of the School of Business.

Dr Addo’s expertise and research interests in travel and tourism studies include transportation systems, hospitality management, events management/meeting planning, travel automation (reservation systems), tourism planning and policy, cultural tourism, tourism marketing, sustainability and tourism development, tour operations, international and educational tours/travel, and European/colonial impacts on travel and tourism in sub-Saharan Africa. His research papers, mostly on Ghana’s tourism industry, have been presented at tourism conferences in Hawaii in USA; Dubai in UAE; Leeds, York and Blackpool in UK; Riga in Latvia, Reykjavik in Iceland; Rhodes Island in Greece; Dublin in Ireland; Evora and Porto n Portugal; Dubrovnik in Croatia; Accra in Ghana; and Halifax and Montreal in Canada. Dr. Addo was a keynote speaker at workshops organized by the Harris Center of Regional Policy and Development, an integral part of MUN. Dr. Addo was a think tank panellist and represented Ghana at the World Tourism Day event when Ghana hosted the global event in 2009. The theme for the international event was “Tourism: Celebrating Diversity”.

Teaching Philosophy and Guiding Principles.

Dr. Addo maintains that travel is his profession, hobby and passion. He teaches, practices, and loves it. He enjoys watching musical videos that feature natural and cultural attractions and he has a strong admiration for authentic cultures. His pedagogical philosophy is "If you don't know your destination, any travel may be justifiable but you may never get there". Dr. Addo’s guiding principles are “Tourism is business that thrives on both natural resources” and “academic freedom, intellectual property rights, and workplace justice are not offered on a silver platter; they have to be earned”.
