Produce graduates to meet job market demands

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Zenith University College (ZUC), Prof. Jophus Anamuah-Mensah, has called on tertiary institutions to produce efficient and quality graduates to meet the rising demands of the job market.

According to him, employers were complaining about the quality of some of the graduates produced by the tertiary institutions every year.
At the third graduation of the ZUC in Accra on Saturday, Prof. Anamuah-Mensah said the demand for efficient and quality graduates called for tertiary institutions to respond accordingly with innovations.

He noted that the inability of tertiary institutions in the country to produce quality graduates had given room to foreign universities to invade the tertiary education sector to provide urgently needed quality education at a higher cost.
“I think the time has come for our tertiary institutions to begin to manage their institutions both as a service provider with very sophisticated clients and a manufacturer of a product,” he added.

Prof. Anamuah-Mensah underscored the need for the institutions to constantly review their course content to keep pace with the changing economic trends, as well as hold consultations with industries to know their needs and demands, adding that that would go a long way tohelp them produce quality graduates.

Poor education standards
Prof. Anamuah-Mensah bemoaned the fact that majority of students in the private universities were non-Ghanaians, noting that there were
many Ghanaian youth who desired to enrol in them but their lack of credit in mathematics or English made it impossible.
This, he said, called for an urgent need to address the poor standards of education in basic schools in the country.

Prof. Anamuah-Mensah advised the graduates to be people of integrity to help develop the nation, adding that they should be “righteous and uncorrupted by the system”.

New programmes
The Rector of the ZUC, Mr Stephen
Takyi-Asiedu, announced that the college would introduce two new programmes in 2016 and named them as Diploma in Business Studies and Ghana Law Degree Programme.

Giving the graduation statistics, Mr Takyi-Asiedu said a total of 645 students were graduating of which 199 students completed their programmes of study in December 2014, 162 in June 2014, while the remaining 284 students completed in December 2013.

The graduating classes included students who had completed courses in Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, Hospitality Management, Business Information Systems and Marketing.
